Estate entrance gates: the whole arrival, designed as one
An estate entrance is a single composition — gates, piers, walls, lighting, intercom and automation designed together. Guildford Gates delivers complete estate entrances across Surrey's private roads and country properties, from bespoke iron pairs on new brick piers to fully integrated access-controlled arrivals. Budgets typically run £18,000–£60,000+.
What separates an estate entrance from a driveway gate
Scale, but more importantly integration. On the private estates around Oxshott, Virginia Water, Sunningdale and the Guildford lanes, entrances fail aesthetically when procured piecemeal — gates from one supplier, piers from a builder, intercom bolted on by an electrician. We design the entrance as one drawing:
- Gates and piers proportioned together — pier height, cap profile and pier spacing set from the gate design, not the other way round.
- Automation concealed from day one: underground motors, control panel housed in a pier void or planted enclosure, ducting for every future service.
- Access control as architecture — video intercom, keypad and ANPR mounted in purpose-built pier niches or a bespoke pedestal, not a plastic box on a pole.
- Lighting, post box, house sign and pedestrian gate resolved in the same composition.

Typical estate entrance configurations and budgets
| Configuration | Budget band | Programme |
|---|---|---|
| Iron pair on existing piers, underground motors, video intercom | £18,000 – £28,000 | 8–12 weeks |
| New brick piers + bespoke iron pair + pedestrian gate + access control | £30,000 – £45,000 | 12–16 weeks |
| Full arrival: walls, piers, gates, ANPR, lighting, in/out lanes | £45,000 – £90,000+ | 16–24 weeks |
These figures include groundworks, ducting, safety systems and commissioning. Private-road entrances shared between residents add consent and cost-sharing questions we're used to managing — including drafting the maintenance agreement wording residents' committees ask for.
Security posture without the fortress look
High-value Surrey properties are targets, and the entrance is the first control point. Measures we design in — discreetly:
- Anti-lift hinge details and lockable manual releases, so releases can't be fished or forced.
- ANPR-triggered opening for resident vehicles, with visitor flows through video intercom to phones anywhere in the world.
- Timed night hold-closed modes and audit logs of every opening.
- Physical rating: solid-bar infills at close centres defeat quick climbing; dog bars close the crawl gap. Full detail in the security guide.
What we won't do is oversell: gates deter and delay, they don't make a property impregnable, and an honest threat conversation produces a better specification than a fearful one.

Frequently asked questions
Do estate gates on a private road need every resident's consent?
If the gates control a shared access, yes in practice — the road's deed or residents' association terms govern it. We provide drawings and specifications residents can approve, and phased quotes for cost-sharing.
Can you build the piers as well as the gates?
Yes. Piers are structural elements carrying dynamic loads; we build them with engineered foundations and internal steel, matched brick or stone, and voids pre-formed for automation and intercom equipment.
How do visitors get in when we're away?
Video intercoms we fit (GSM or app-based) ring your phone wherever you are; you see the visitor and open the gates remotely. Couriers can be given time-limited PIN codes. See access control.
What's the lead time for a full estate entrance?
Twelve to twenty-four weeks depending on pier construction and ironwork complexity. Design and planning (where required) run ahead of fabrication, so early engagement shortens the visible works.
