Electric gate repair cost in 2026

Most electric gate repairs in the UK cost a £50 to £100 call-out plus £65 to £85 an hour, with parts on top. A replacement motor runs £300 to £1,800 and intercom repair or replacement £250 to £1,200 (Checkatrade, 2026). Your engineer confirms the price after diagnosing the fault.

Estimates compiled from the published UK price guides listed under Sources, checked October 2026. They are market ranges, not quotes. Large or bespoke entrances often sit at the top of these ranges or above. Your price is confirmed by the installer after a site visit, before any work is booked.

These are national ranges from Checkatrade's published guide. Surrey prices for heavy or high-specification gates may sit towards the top of the range.

What drives the price

  • Diagnosis time. A blocked photocell takes minutes; an intermittent wiring fault can take hours.
  • Parts. Motors, control boards and intercom panels are the expensive items. Older or obsolete systems can cost more to source.
  • Gate weight and type. Heavy swing gates and underground motors cost more to work on than light above-ground systems.
  • Safety work. If the gate lacks photocells or safety edges, a responsible engineer will recommend adding them.

Repair or replace?

Repair usually wins when the gate structure is sound and the fault is electrical or mechanical. Replacement is worth pricing when the gate is corroded or twisted, parts are no longer made, or bringing the system to a safe standard would mean replacing most of it anyway.

Keep repair costs down

An annual service, with a force test, cleaning and adjustment, catches worn hinges and tired batteries before they become call-outs. See servicing and safety checks and servicing costs.

Questions people ask

Why do motor prices vary so much?

A small 24V swing motor for a light gate costs far less than an underground motor or a heavy-duty sliding gate operator. Brand, gate weight and whether the box or foundation needs work also change the price.

Is servicing cheaper than repairs?

Usually. Published guides put annual servicing at about £150 to £500 a year. A service catches worn parts before they fail and includes the force test that shows the gate is safe.

Can I get a fixed price before the visit?

Not reliably, because the fault has to be diagnosed first. Describing the symptoms, gate type and brand on the form helps the engineer give a better idea of likely costs.
