What electric gates cost in 2026: an honest Surrey price guide
What do electric gates actually cost in 2026? Real installed prices for aluminium, wrought iron and estate gates in Surrey, what drives the number up, and where the quotes you'll get hide their margins.
The real 2026 numbers
Most gate companies keep their prices for the sales visit. We publish ours, because a number you can check beats a number you have to extract. As an installed guide for Surrey in 2026:
- Automated aluminium pairs — from £6,500. The contemporary, low-maintenance choice; price moves with width, infill and automation.
- Bespoke wrought iron — £9,500 to £16,000. Hand-worked, drawn to the house, built to outlast the mortgage.
- Estate entrances — from £18,000. Gates, piers, lighting, intercom and ANPR designed as one arrival.
- Automating existing gates — £2,800 to £6,000. After an honest feasibility check of leaves, hinges and posts.
Every figure includes safety equipment and force testing. The full line-by-line modelling is on our electric gate cost page.
What actually drives the price
Three things move a gate quote more than anything else, and knowing them lets you read any quote you are given:
- Gate type and weight. Sliding and cantilever gates need a heavier motor and groundwork — a track or cantilever beam — so they cost more than a swing pair. See sliding vs swing.
- Motor choice. Underground motors look cleaner but cost more to install than above-ground arms or rams. See underground vs above-ground.
- Access control. A keypad is cheap; video intercom, ANPR and app control add up. Match it to how your household actually works.
Where quotes hide their margin
The number that matters is the installed, compliant, all-in price — and that is where cheaper quotes quietly cut. Watch for safety equipment and force testing left off the quote to make the headline look lower (it is a legal requirement, not an optional extra — see gate safety standards), foundations undersized for the gate's weight, and motors specified to weight alone rather than to wind load. A quote that is meaningfully cheaper than the ranges above is usually cheaper because something that should be in it is not. Compare any quote against our published numbers, including ours.

Frequently asked questions
How much does an electric gate cost in 2026?
As an installed Surrey guide: automated aluminium pairs from £6,500, bespoke wrought iron £9,500–£16,000, estate entrances from £18,000, and automating existing gates £2,800–£6,000 — all including safety equipment and force testing.
Why are some gate quotes so much cheaper?
Usually because something that should be included is not — safety equipment and force testing left off, undersized foundations, or a motor specified to weight but not wind load. A quote well below the normal installed ranges is cheaper for a reason worth finding before you sign.
Do gate prices include the safety testing?
They should. Force testing to BS EN 12453 and the required safety devices are a legal part of a powered gate, not an upsell. Our quoted prices always include them; if a quote doesn't mention them, ask why.
